Shishukunj wins BT Community Champions Award of £100

British Telecom (BT) has recognised Mahendrabhai's commitment to his community by awarding Shishukunj £100 as part of the BT Community Champions Awards.

Shishukunj would like to say a Big Thank You to BT for this award.

Shishukunj is Awarded £250 from PricewaterhouseCoopers

We are proud to announce that PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) has awarded Shishukunj £250. Pramal, who works at PwC Birmingham, has been recognised for his contribution to the community through Shishukunj and therefore PwC have shown support in his undertakings by this gift of £250.

Shishukunj would like to say a big Thank You to PwC.

Who runs the Walsall Shishukunj?

Shishukunj was inspired by Mahendrabhai Lad and his wife, Dakshabhen Lad. Living in the Walsall Hindu community, they felt there was a lack of 'Sanatan Dharma' amongst the youth. They remembered how influential the 'Shishukunj' (Childrens Hindu Sunday School) they attended when they were children in Kenya and Leicester was like. With a vision of seeing children as being the leaders of the future, Mahendrabhai and his wife set up a Shishukunj in Walsall to nurture the local development of this Hindu Dharma and Culture that the older generations seem so proud off.

Shishkunj began in December 2005 and is supported by the whole family: two son's - Pramal and Amal, and daughter, Deepa.

Since the start, there have been a core group of parents and volunteers who shared the vision of Mahendrabhai. They include; Kajalbhen Paw, Belabhen Mehta, Sheetalbhen Parekh, Samyuktabhen Popat, Manishabhen Patel and Manubhai Vyas.

Hindu Childrens Library

IDEA: Library consisting of a collection of books, CDs and DVDs about Hinduism (Gods, stories, cartoons etc) that children can borrow once a month. Also, can have a parents collection.

We could bring in a box full of various books and discs once a month, say the first Sunday of each month, when parents and children can borrow a book/CD. They would then have to return this the following month.

Especially useful for Holidays/Vacations when there is no Shishukunj - keep children learning in a fun and interactive way.

Current titles available in the Library would include:
  • Hanuman Cartoon DVD
  • Krishna Cartoon DVD
  • Interactive Bhagavad Gita As It Is - CD-ROM
  • Hanuman Chalisa CD (Krishna Das)
  • Various Comics
  • Gujarati in 30 Days Book
  • Mahabharat for Children
  • Ramayan for Children

A complete list with brief explainations would be made available and all CDs/DVDs would have information on where to purchase (including a polite note that copying is not advisable).

Money from recent funds (e.g. PwC Donation) and donated items would be used to build up library.

Shishukunj comes online!

Namaste

I felt it was about time we began to share the joys and experiences of the Shree Ram Mandir Walsall Shishukunj to the world wide web - so I've set up a blog where members of Shishukunj can write information about events, post pictures and write up a record of the events we have had.

Please feel free to share ideas, thoughts, comments or anything else you think would be good!

Jai Shree Ram
